A Little About Me...
Hello Everyone! My name is Amy Heath. I've been teaching ESL in Korea for a few years. I returned to my hometown (Midland, MI) in January. My time in Korea was very rewarding. I miss it...especially the food! My experience taught me quite a bit about myself, America and they way we see things. I learned that belief systems vary, and that "normal" can be very relative. I also learned I can embrace a new culture, while still being true to myself. I also became an expert at using chopsticks! These combined experiences have influenced me immensely as an educator and as a person.
I've been teaching on and off for about eight years. My undergraduate degree was in Speech Therapy, which I utilized quite a bit in Korea. Koreans seem to have an immense knowledge of English structure, but often struggle with the physical act of speaking the language. I found I could provide "Alternative Accent Training" and help students become more confident in their English Speaking skills. In Korea I started teaching at various colleges and I became interested in working in a more administrative field. After researching several schools, I decided on the Masters of Arts in Education program through Michigan State University. In Korea I worked at the Yeongworld English Education Center as a head teacher. This leadership experience gave me the confidence to pursue a degree focus in K-12 and Post-Secondary Education.
